50 Years After Their Break Up A Couple Makes A Surprising Discovery

Though often presented in books and movies, love at first sight is a rare occurrence for most, but one real life couple knew the minute they locked eyes that they were soul mates. Within weeks, they were ready to commit to one another, for better or for worse.

Whirlwind Romance

Janice Rude and Prentiss Willson met as undergraduates at Occidental College in Los Angeles, California in 1962. But shortly after announcing their engagement, the couple sadly split. 50 years later, they each uncovered the shock of their lives.

Janice Rude Prentiss Wilson

Small Town Girl

Janice Rude came from humble beginnings. Raised to be a hard worker in the wild west of Reno, Nevada, she recalls her father was a tough guy, with a lot of street smarts. Though intellectual pursuits were beyond his care or comprehension, he supported his daughter in her desire to get an education. She enrolled in Occidental College in the early 1960s in order to study for a bachelors degree in Biology. But she never expected to meet the love of her life there.

An Occident Waiting To Happen

Occidental College is a small, private liberal arts college located in Los Angeles, California. The college was established in 1887 in the Eagle Rock neighborhood of LA by a group of presbyterians who wanted to learn in Southern California. The College Board considered turning Occidental into an all men’s school twice, once in 1912, and another time in 1931. Luckily for Prentiss and Janice, the college’s co-ed status was maintained, or they never would have fallen in love.

Cafe Love

Given Janice’s modest means, she took up a job working the morning shift at the campus cafeteria, in order to help her cover her private school tuition. Dutiful and committed, she awoke early every day in time to start the morning grind. When she arrived at the cafeteria, she was immediately greeted by a flurry of activity, as the athletes visited the canteen for breakfast before going off to their morning practice. Janice met many of the school’s small student body, but only one who really mattered.

A Connecticut Yankee in Southern California

Prentiss Willson was raised in a well to do family of East Coast transplants. A family of intellectuals, he was expected to excel in his studies before moving on to a preeminent practitioner of some respected career, such as law or medicine. He arrived at Occidental College a year after Janice Rude in 1962, and in keeping with his upbringing, immediately pledged the fraternity, Kappa Sigma, which became embroiled in controversy shortly after his arrival.

Eyes Meet

School had only been in session for a month, but Janice Rude was getting the hang of her job. She came in through the back entrance to the kitchen, hung her purse on a hook, and wrapped an apron around her waist. She checked the scheduled stations pinned to the bulletin board on the back wall. Cereal station, her favorite. It was the least messy job. She hurried out to the counter, and saw a young man waiting for service, when her heart jumped into her throat.

Breathless

Prentiss Willson felt like he was settling into his freshman year of college quite well. A month into the semester, he pushed himself to awake early, in anticipation of going for a run before he began classes. He headed over to the dining hall, and served himself a tray of eggs, bacon, and buttered toast. The cafeteria was just waking up, and he was first in line. The morning waitress hurried over to help serve him, when their eyes met.

From Here To Eternity

Janice Rude and Prentiss Willson felt like time had stopped as they looked into each other’s eyes for the first time. She felt a rush of blood rising into her cheeks, which to Prentiss, looked like sheer radiance. Looking at her, he almost couldn’t breathe she was so beautiful. Janice was taken as well, but in her bashfulness, she broke from his gaze and looked down at his tray while completing the transaction. But Prentiss was hooked.

A Morning Routine

The next morning, and every morning thereafter, Prentiss awoke at 5:30 am in order to be first in line at Janice Rude’s station. Whenever she looked up and saw him standing there, eagerly gripping his tray, a small smile would play on her face. As she felt herself blush, she would without fail look away from him, but as one morning rolled into the next, her courage grew, and she would be able to return his gaze once more.

Small Talk

Prentiss knew he had to talk to her at some point. For several weeks, he’d try to psych himself up as he walked from his dormitory to the dining hall, but whenever he would see her standing there, a shy smile delicately trembling on her lips, he’d feel the words freeze in his throat. But one day, he finally managed a hello. “Hi,” she answered softly. Her cheeks had blushed an even deeper shade of red, as she promptly looked away.

A Name Like No Other

It only took three and a half weeks, but Prentiss finally knew her name. Janice Rude. It rang in his mind, reverberating between his ears as he tried to focus in his morning lecture. “Prentiss Willson,” Janice whispered to herself. She had heard the name before, when Kappa Sigma publicly quit the national chapter in order to allow a black student, Gene Grisby, to pledge. Now that she knew his name, she floated through the rest of her shift, as if in a dream.

A Class Problem

As Prentiss continued his daily visits, he began to learn more about the pretty canteen girl who wouldn’t leave his thoughts. He learned that she was a sophomore, and later recounts, “I actually didn’t think I had a chance with her. She was a year ahead of me and just so beautiful.” But that still didn’t deter him from his visits, which he made “every day, at 6:00 a.m., because I just wanted to see her and have our little morning exchange.”

Absence Of The Heart

But there was one day that Prentiss didn’t show up to the cafeteria. It was just before Thanksgiving break, and though most students would be leaving the campus shortly, Prentiss was no where to be found. Though the campus’s pre-Thanksgiving dinner was not at their usual meeting time, Janice had expected him to be there. While they conversed more freely these days, they still had not spent any time together outside of the school’s canteen. When he failed to arrive, her heart sank.

Woman Of Action

Though Janice was disappointed to miss Prentiss that evening, she decided she was no longer going to wait around for him. By asking around her classmates, she managed to gather enough intel to find out that he had already gone home to his parents’ house.  When one of his fraternity brothers kindly gave her his address. As she walked to her car in the balmy Los Angeles autumn, her nerves almost got the better of her, but she managed to follow through.

Hitting The Road

The road from Los Angeles to Santa Maria was long and unfamiliar, stretching a full 150 miles north of Los Angeles. Janice drove alone, humming along to the radio in order to keep calm. She knew she was taking a risk, driving to his parents house without even calling first, but something compelled her to go ahead anyway. After nearly 3 hours of solitude, only a wrinkled map by her side, she arrived at his parents ranch, parked, and knocked on their door.

Opportunity Knocks

Prentiss sat in his parents’ living room, curled on the couch reading a book. He had just returned for Thanksgiving break the night before and was anticipating a comforting meal at home. His only regret was that he didn’t have the chance to see Janice at the cafeteria that morning. But as he contemplated this missed interaction, there was a knock at his door, startling him out of his reverie. He hurried to answer it, but never expected who was there to see him.

Grace And Thanks

Janice stood on the doorstep, regretting her audacity, as she heard footsteps approaching the door. Prentiss himself answered, and the shock in his expression was palpable. “Hi,” she said. Prentiss couldn’t believe his eyes, the girl of his dreams, standing there, on his doorstep, because she missed him. Janice apologized for showing up unannounced, as Prentiss led her inside. He introduced Janice to his parents, with whom she connected instantly, especially his mother, “just like I [did],” Prentiss recalls.

Cut From The Same Cloth

Janice joined Prentiss and his family for Thanksgiving dinner, before returning to Occidental College for the rest of the weekend. Upon Prentiss’s return to Los Angeles, the two were scarcely seen without each other, always strolling around campus arm in arm. It was apparent to everyone who met them that the pair was made for one another, they were so in sync. When they looked at one another, their eyes shone, and neither could help but smile all the time.

Enchanted December

Such a whirlwind was their romance that Prentiss decided in early December to ask Janice to marry him. He had known from the moment he laid eyes on her that “we were simply meant to be.” Though they had only been going steady for a couple of weeks at that point, he couldn’t even imagine his life without her. With the help of his fraternity brothers, Prentiss planned a romantic evening for the two, culminating with his marriage proposal.

Love And Marriage

Janice didn’t even have a second to think before she heard herself saying yes. Not that she needed a second. She had been so in love with him from the start that she wouldn’t have ever said no. As he slid the gold band studded with a modest diamond onto her finger, he couldn’t have felt more elated. But the elation would soon turn to heartache, and rather than wedding planning the pair would be fighting for their love.

An Announcement For The Ages

After calling their respective mothers, Prentiss and Janice set about composing an engagement announcement to be released in the local paper. Prentiss received many well wishes from his fraternity brothers, as Janice was likewise celebrating with her sorority sisters. The girls were giddy with delight as she showed off her ring, and they admired the announcement in the paper together. But at the end of the announcement, one line was the most telling, “no date has been set for the wedding.”

50YearMarriage24-e1501250140807

Dad On Arrival

There was only one person who didn’t approve of the couple’s union, Janice’s father. As a blue collar business man, he couldn’t relate to Prentiss’s intellectual parents, his father was a doctor after all, and though neither can quite remember the reason he gave at the time, he threatened to stop paying for Janice’s tuition if she didn’t break up with Prentiss. Distraught, Janice called her mother again, and the two tried to come up with a work around.

SHOPPING CENTER SANTA MARIA, CA

The Schemes Of Women

In order to help her daughter out, Janice’s mother applied for a second mortgage for their house, hoping it would provide the family with enough extra income that Janice could continue her studies without her father’s monetary contributions. It was to no avail. Though Janice was excelling in her studies, she feared if she dropped out to marry Prentiss, he wouldn’t respect her as much, and his eye would begin to wander to smarter girls who had degrees.

Occidental

Unfounded Fears

Prentiss insisted that Janice’s fears were unfounded. He didn’t care if she had a degree or not, he would love her just the same. His mother even suggested the pair elope. But between her father’s pressure, and her anxieties that she would be inferior if she defied her father, Janice was suddenly struggling to stay afloat, in ways Prentiss couldn’t fully understand. By January, Janice had a big decision to make, stay with the man she loved and leave college, or break up.

Broken And Alone

Prentiss recalls, “We tried to figure things out but I guess we weren’t smart enough. We had to. We didn’t want to, but we had to.” Devastated, Janice returned the ring with tears in her eyes. Prentiss’s heart was shattered into pieces, and he worried it would be impossible to repair. The lovers went their separate ways. After graduation, Janice returned home not to become a biologist, but in order to run her family’s diving board manufacturing business in Reno, Nevada.

Rising Up

Prentiss was able to pick himself up by the bootstraps and eventually moved on. He continued on from Occidental College to Harvard Law School, a journey that would be mirrored (somewhat) by Barack Obama two decades later. Prentiss worked his way up the ladder to become one of the top tax attorneys in the San Francisco Bay area, and though he later married someone else, he could never erase the memory of his time with Janice from his mind.

slide_273062_1950332_free

Success And Longing

Janice was successful in her field, even being inducted as an honorary member of the United States of America Diving Association’s Hall of Fame for her contributions to the industry. She likewise married another man, but in parallel journey’s neither her nor Prentiss’s marriage lasted. It’s an unsurprising development for a pair who had clearly found their soul mate in one another, and any future relationship was bound to be tainted by the memory of their pure love.

Twin Tragedies

In a twist of fate, both Janice and Prentiss found themselves in identical situations when their mothers both passed on within months of each other. The pair had rarely seen the other in the past 5 decades, but suddenly fate had decided to push them together once more. As each was going through their late mother’s possessions, they came across a shocking coincidence, one that was so striking, it managed to put the pair back in touch nearly 50 years after their break up.

slide_273062_1950336_free

Unearthing An Artifact

As Prentiss sorted through his late mother’s possessions, grief weighing on his heart, he unearthed a crumbling bit of newspaper. It was a clipping of his and Janice’s engagement announcement from all those years ago. Janice too found the very same clipping in the contents of her late mother’s wallet, realizing that she had carried the scrap of paper around, a memory of her daughter’s true love, for nearly half her life. Prentiss felt compelled to reach out to Janice, but would she feel the same?

Like Time Stood Still

The pair reconnected over brunch at a San Francisco mainstay, Cliff House, on June 20, 2010. The minute they set eyes on one another, time stood still once more, and it was like they’d never been apart. They couldn’t help but beam at the other as they caught up on nearly 50 years of life. “The mothers got it,” said Willson. “The mothers simply knew, and I think we [he and Rude] also knew.” Six months after their reunion, they were engaged once more.

A 50 Year Engagement

On August 19, 2012, Janice Rude and Prentiss Willson returned to the place where the magic began, and finally tied the knot. As an homage to their late mothers’ insight, they used their original engagement announcement on their new wedding invitations, only this time, the specified that a date had indeed been set. With several of their Occidental classmates in attendance, the stars at last shined down on the two lovebirds as they pledged their love to one another for all eternity.

Woman’s Husband Vanished After Their Wedding, 68 Years Later She Learns The Truth

Almost seven decades after marrying who she considered to be the love of her life, Peggy Harris learned the truth about his sudden disappearance.

Into Thin Air

Maybe it was a different time back then, or perhaps the fact Peggy felt so strongly about Billie, but she never ceased to seek out information regarding his whereabouts. Never seeing her husband again after only six weeks of marriage might seem like the ultimate deal breaker, but Peggy knew deep in her heart Billie would not just disappear…

Into Thin Air

Not Giving Up

In order to find out what ever happened to her husband, Peggy needed to be prepared to roll up her sleeves and dig deep. For years, Peggy contacted all sorts of people and gathered what little information she managed to put together and tried to connect the dots, but there was no use. Billie was gone, and so was any shred of evidence that could hint where he might be. Still, being the strong minded woman she was, Peggy was not going to give up.

billie peggy
Not Giving Up

The Unknown

Indeed, Billie and Peggy’s story goes to show that despite being in the unknown, genuine love really does conquer all. Although Peggy has gone through plenty in her long life, the one thing she was not willing to give up on was her one true love. Plenty drew inspiration from the Peggy and Billie’s love story, who despite the curves that life threw their way, had faith in their hearts that everything will work out for the best.

The Unknown

Met In An Uncommon Way

Born in Vernon, Texas in the 1920’s, Peggy Seale had just turned 18 when she started working as an electrical instrument mechanic at the Altus Oklahoma Air Force Base. Shortly after, she met Billie through his father, who was employed as an assistant supervisor at the same base. Billie’s father was sure Peggy and his son would hit it off – and he was right. Peggy was kind, beautiful and smart, but there was something about her that differentiated her from the rest.

billie peggy
Met In An Uncommon Way

Unlike Any Other Girl

Peggy was so unique that she was the only female mechanic on the Altus Oklahoma Air Force Base. Back then, it was not common for women to draft in the army, let alone work in a male dominated field such as mechanics. But Peggy was always one to stick to her gut and follow her heart, whether she received support from others or not it simply did not matter. She knew who she was and what really mattered – staying true to herself.

billie peggy
Unlike Any Other Girl

Match Made In Heaven

After meeting Billie’s father, who was working in the propeller department, Peggy was soon introduced to his son, who loved how quirky and set in her mind Peggy was. While other girls were into beauty routines and landing wealthy men in their hooks, Peggy was interested in solving complicated mechanical problems and dedicated all of her time to serving her country in the best way she could. The moment they were introduced, Peggy and Billie felt a connection they could not deny.

Match Made In Heaven

Old Fashioned Courting

However, their first encounter was not exactly what one would call “love at first sight,” since the two did not meet the first time they were introduced to one another. That’s right – the first time Billie and Peggy ever exchanged words was through letters. This kind of initial interaction is not something you often hear about these days, but back then, it was common for couples to get to know one another through writing letters if they had lived far away from each other.

billie peggy
Old Fashioned Courting

It Was Improper

This is the way Peggy tells it: “There was an opening in the production control office so I took that job. Billie’s father was the assistant manager in the propeller department there. Soon after I came there he wanted me to write to his son who was a student pilot and I let him know that I did not write to men I did not know – particularly service men.” Indeed, Peggy was not willing to act in a way that would disgrace her.

billie peggy
It Was Improper

Taking Control

Shortly after, Billie heard about Peggy through his father and decided to take matters into his own hands: “I began to get letters from Billie. I was a little fearful of this man, who had not seen me but he thought I was okay. So when he came on leave (from the army), all of a sudden the door to the airplane opened and there was Billie Harris saying ‘Hello Peggy,’ and that was about it.”

billie peggy
Taking Control

Based On Friendship

Billie lived out in San Antonio, which was some distance from Peggy’s base, so sending letters was the simplest way to get to know one another. “Meeting” through the mail, the couple began to look forward to hearing from each other. Their friendship blossomed, and bond grew stronger with each letter that arrived. After some time of corresponding, the letters turned slightly more flirtatious. The old-school way of putting it was “courting,” and that is precisely what it was. The letters were respectful and sweet.

Wedding Bells

Peggy and Billie went by the book. After they got to know each other via personal letters, Bille felt like it was time to move their relationship onto the next level. He proposed to Peggy, who was quick to respond with a “yes.” After a considerable amount of time mailing, it was only natural they would want to progress their courtship. And so, come September 22, 1943, Peggy and Bille married in the sunshine state of Florida. Unfortunately, Peggy and Billie had no idea what was about to happen.

billie peggy
Wedding Bells

Utterly Broke

They were dirt poor. In fact, Billie and Peggy were so broke, Peggy had no choice but to present Billie with her Vernon High School class ring instead of the custom wedding ring during their ceremony since she simply could not afford to purchase one. The future was unknown and times were rough, but for Peggy and Billie, that did not matter. All they cared about is that after this time, they were finally able to be together as husband and wife.

billie peggy
Utterly Broke

Tough Start At Life

Thinking forward and looking into the future, there were a lot of question marks regarding how their joint lives were going to turn out. While Peggy and Billie were both invested in starting a family, they had to stay realistic and understand that they had no means of providing for them. The two weighed all their options until they concluded that Billie would have to be the primary provider of their family. But this was only the start their problems.

billie peggy
Tough Start At Life

Then The News Came

Only then they received the most distressing news. Billie was in a celebratory mood for two separate reasons – one was on a personal level: he married the woman of his dreams and looked forward to starting their lives together. The other was professional success – Billie successfully completed his U.S, Army Air Corps pilot training at Brooks Field in San Antonio. Along with this achievement came a brand new, superior rank of a second lieutenant, and a letter declaring it was his turn to serve his country in the war.

billie peggy
Then The News Came

The Big Blow

Billie and Peggy had no solution to the situation. As saddening as it was, they both took an oath to protect their land and nation even to the extent of putting their lives out on the line, which trumped they made to each other – to stay together no matter what, as long as they both shall live. They did not get to spend as much time together as they had hoped and the thought of bringing kids was no longer an option.

billie peggy
The Big Blow

Facing Reality

Peggy watched in silence as her husband gathered his things and made his way towards the headquarters. It seemed unfair, having spent such little time together and already having to part, but Billie had no choice. It was his duty, that he took seriously and prided himself for doing so. Having kids and nurturing his family would have to wait for his return, although deep down both of them knew there was no guarantee that was even going to happen.

billie peggy
Facing Reality

No Escape

War World II was in full throttle. Americans were drafted on a daily basis – especially men who showed spectacular potential and useful sets of skills. Being both, Billie knew his day was coming, which is probably why he was not shocked or alarmed when that letter arrived, calling on him to report in Tallahassee and say his farewells to his loved ones. In an interview Peggy gave a website intended to commemorate the 354th Fighter Group, Peggy explained how she handled the situation.

billie peggy
No Escape

Women Were Helpless

“His group was all taken to Tallahassee, and the wives were taken there to a huge hotel.” Then further instructions were given to the ladies, as Peggy explained: “When the men were called up, the wives were told to go home and not tell anyone that their husbands had been sent overseas until they had arrived there safely.” Times were rough, but there was not much one could do. Peggy and Billie had to deal with the fact that, after only being married for 6 weeks, they would have to part.

billie peggy
Women Were Helpless

Secrets Kept

Indeed, the wives were told not tell a soul about their husbands being sent overseas to participate in the war, not until they had received confirmation their spouses arrived safely. But sadly for Peggy, the announcement she received about Billie’s safe arrival in Europe would be the last life signal she ever received from him. The reason behind the lack of information regarding Lieutenant Billie Harris’s whereabouts was due to disorganization leading to a bureaucratic mess on behalf of the U.S. Army.

Secrets Kept

Chaos

The military could not tell its left from right to the extent of delivering Peggy false news regarding where her husband was. The army’s Supreme Headquarters in Allied France told Peggy her husband was safe and sound, making his way home – but the reality could not be further than this. After the authorities made a series of mistakes concerning her significant other, Peggy understood that if she ever wanted to see or hear from her husband again, she had no choice but to find out for herself.

billie peggy
Chaos

Unbelievably Unsystematic

Peggy went through hell and back: “A telegram came – the moment I opened it, I went into pieces. After a while, I looked at it again, then I went down to the telegraph office and brought with me letters from Billie that were written after the date of the telegram. The telegram said, ‘missing: July 7th’, and I had letters, hand written letters, dated after that. Later, they came up with ‘missing in action: July 17’.”

billie peggy
Unbelievably Unsystematic

No Information Given

Peggy clung on to whatever information was sent her way, tried to connect the dots and embraced what little reinforcement she received from others: “I was told not to be concerned, that no doubt he was being ‘processed.’ Billie’s parents and I chose to believe that he was back in the United States. We were hoping that he was in a hospital somewhere and maybe just didn’t know who he was or had lost his memory. We had heard of cases like that.”

Calling On The Red Cross

Despite Peggy’s and Billie’s parents’ best efforts to retrieve his footsteps, Billie was gone for good. By March 1945, Peggy already came to terms with the notion she would probably never see her husband again, and that he most like died. Although an agonizing predicament, Peggy bargained with herself and reached the conclusion that, as horrid as the truth may be, she must know what happened to her husband. Instead of escaping the brutal truth, Peggy bravely contacted the International Red Cross.

billie peggy
Calling On The Red Cross

Small Steps

With new hope on the horizon, Peggy thought she finally found an organization that would assist her in discovering Billie’s fate. Although the Red Cross was not willing to initiate an official search for Billie, it was successful in unveiling little bits of information and gathering details that were missing before. Suddenly, new data was rising to the surface, and for a moment it seemed as though the truth about Billie was finally about to be revealed.

billie peggy
Small Steps

Hopelessly Devoted

As for most wives or family members of army soldiers, serviceman appear at their door to reveal the devastating news to the relatives of soldiers who have died in the army. Peggy Harris never got a knock at the door, she never got a final telegram, and certainly never got the explanation she so deserved. Even seven decades later, Peggy remained devoted to uncovering the truth and said, “Billie was married to me all of his life, and I choose to be married to him all of my life.”

peggy
Hopelessly Devoted

The Strength Of A Woman

Just as her role in the Altus Oklahoma Air Force Base, Peggy was different from the rest and stuck to what she believed was right. She joined the force to be a mechanic and, even though this was not the norm for many girls her age, she was committed and driven. The same went to show when she set herself the task of finding out what happened to her husband, Billie. Her strong will and determination allowed her to persevere, even if it took nearly 70 years for an answer.

peggy
The Strength Of A Woman

Years Of Sleepless Nights

It was too soon to celebrate. Unluckily, the information gathered was contradictory, claiming in one report that Billie was undoubtedly missing, and in another that he was found dead. The searches dragged on for years, but Peggy was relentless on her journey for the truth. As frustrating as it was hitting dead ends and dealing with apathetic figures as points of contact, Peggy was not willing to raise a white flag. Soon, her lifelong search would pay off.

billie peggy
Years Of Sleepless Nights

Inconsiderate Announcement

Billie’s location and fate remained unknown by the time 2005 rolled around, as Peggy’s local congressman, Rep. Thornberry, took the stage and carelessly announced Billie was a troop that went missing in action as a part of his speech. Not only did Thornberry have absolutely no idea what he was talking about, but his team flunked out on carrying out proper research, hence insensitively throwing random, baseless assumptions into thin air. Thornberry did eventually express his regret for speaking of a matter he knew nothing about.

billie peggy
Inconsiderate Announcement

Mishandling Is An Understatement

He apologized for “mishandling” the situation, but no offering of remorse would provide Peggy with the closure she so desperately needed. She deserved to know what happened to her husband. Little did she know the truth was right under her nose, waiting to be discovered by none other than Billie’s very own flesh and blood – his cousin, Alton Harvey. Of course, all of Billie’s family was committed to finding out what ever happened to him, but after years of seemingly endless digging, the search was over.

billie peggy
Mishandling Is An Understatement

Piecing It All Together

Alton Harvey was just as devoted to finding out what happened to his cousin as Peggy was. He explained that he “Didn’t feel it was right that he just went off to war and didn’t come back – end of story.” He continued, You need to know what happened to him.” This is when Alton began requesting Billie’s military records, and a good thing too, because this was the next step to finally finding out whatever happened to Billie Harris.

Piecing It All Together

Didn’t See It Coming

Harvey discovered Billie’s turn of events as he browsed around the Department of the Army’s scattered and hidden files. Once he gained access to everything, he was determined to uncover where his relative has been after all those years. Interestingly enough, throughout his skim, Harvey learned that he was not the only person looking for his cousin. In actuality, there was another individual who was fishing around for information about Billie – a foreign French woman Harvey knew nothing about.

billie peggy
Didn’t See It Coming

There It Was

That very same French woman apparently requested the same files Harvey browsed through, but with one significant difference – she asked for it half a year before Harvey’s search. Unsure as to why a woman of her origin would request such information to be handed to her concerning his own cousin, Harvey was more curious than ever to find out what happened to Billie. After decades of uncertainty, finally, there was the truth, staring him blankly in the face.

billie peggy
There It Was

The Truth

The files exposed that Lieutenant Billie Harris was, in fact, posted in the United Kingdom. On duty, his role was to fly a P-51 Mustang, supposed allied bombers and fly across the English Channel on a daily basis. His exemplary work ethic, ultimate team work qualities and perfected professional skills all lead to Billie being awarded a Distinguished Flying Across award in addition to two other Air Medals consisting of 11 oak leaf clusters. Billie was a rare, preeminent soldier and patriot, but that was not all.

billie peggy
The Truth

On His Way Home

Having completed almost 100 missions, Billie was entitled to return home as of July 1944. Over the moon with joy about being able to see his loving Peggy again, Billie wrote to his faithful bride a letter enthused with excitement, expressing that he missed her dearly and was making his way home soon. Sadly, fate had a different idea concerning Billie’s future, and so instead of boarding the ship he was assigned to, Billie was told his trip home would have to wait.

billie peggy
On His Way Home

Heartbroken With Disappointment

Billie had to sit aside and watch others make their way onto the ship that was intended to take him home on account of having too many wounded troops on board. Poor Billie simply had no room, and to make things worse, the next ship that would make its way towards the U.S. was weeks away. As if they had not been through enough, the low capacity on the ship prevented Billie from boarding it. It was this call that forever changed their lives.

It Wasn’t His Time

Since there was not much to do until the next cruise home, Billie continued carrying out missions for the army. The last flying mission Billie had also consisted of the last moment he was alive. Sadly, Billie’s plane was shot down as he was flying over the town of Les Ventes in northern France. As his plane was spiraling down from the sky above, Billie had a crucial decision to make. With only minutes left to make the call, Billie did the unthinkable.

The Decision That Changed His Life

His plane was hit. Thanks to Billie’s years of training, he vastly comprehended what was about to happen. Weighing his options at the speed of light, Billie realized he had a choice to make – flee the plane by ejecting from his seat and thereby save his own life, or stay in the descending blasting aircraft, divert it away from the French townspeople below and inevitably plunge towards his death. It was a tough call to make, nearly impossible for some… But not Billie.

Identity Revealed

Of course, Billie chose to crash his plane in a nearby forest, one that was just far enough from the town’s populated areas so that it did not injure another soul. As was later revealed, the French woman who requested Billie’s files was from that very same town Billie saved on the somber day of his death. That woman’s name was Valerie Quesnal. The reason for her search was that the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Les Ventes was coming up.

Identity Revealed

They Had No Idea Who He Was

Billie died that day in that horrid crash that took his life, so the town of Les Ventes thought the least it could do was honor his memory, which it has been doing ever since that day. However, the town did not have a lot of information about their hero, so they assumed the selfless pilot was a Canadian. They buried him in their local cemetery and spoke of him in plenty of occasions, but they had no idea who he was.

Extreme Measures

It did not matter if he was of British, Canadian or American origin – what he did was heroic. Billie willingly gave up his own life and any future dreams he had for himself – and at a very young age at that – for the sake of others, strangers he knew absolutely nothing about. Billie was always the first one to volunteer during his service, always put others’ needs and comfort in front of his own, but this was extreme even for him.

Heading Back Home

Once Peggy heard of her husband’s body’s whereabouts, she acted quickly and had him shipped over so that he could be close to her. His remains were moved to a grave in the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial. His extraordinary, selfless act and show of courage saved many lives, which is why he is still spoken about admiringly in the French town of Les Ventes to this day. It is “the most decorated grave in all of Normandy” according to CBS News.

The Town Which Does Not Forget

Harvey discovered that “the citizens of the town snuck around when the Germans weren’t looking and had a little funeral for him and buried him in their cemetery.” Even after all these years, his actions have not been forgotten. According to CBS News, the townspeople march down the main road, fittingly named Place Billie D. HARRIS, three times a year. While Peggy may not have known of his whereabouts for years, the town of Les Ventes would commemorate the fallen soldier.

Always A Hero

Since the people of Les Ventes were not aware if Billie Harris had any relatives who would pay any visits to his grave, they would decorate his grave and visit their town’s hero. Even the mayor gets choked up when he mentions Harris’s name, and he will always be remembered as the soldier that saved their town’s people. Since Peggy learned of his whereabouts, she too would send flowers ten times a year to where he was buried.

Paying Tribute

Since learning of her husband’s death and of the whereabouts of where his plane crashed that fateful day, Peggy makes an annual pilgrimage to the nearby woods. She made these visits with the assistance of Guy Surleau, the only witness still living who speaks highly of Billie Harris. Although Guy believes he could have done more, Peggy’s response is, “I like to think that he was still conscious enough to know that a friend stood by him,” a sobbing Peggy said. “And that this man is that friend.”

Getting Closure

If it was not for Alton Harvey discovering Billie Harris’s military records, Peggy might never have got the closure she so longed for. She was finally able to discover what happened to her husband and about the final moments before his death, which made him a national hero. Even though they were married for just six weeks, this mission to discover what happened to her husband for nearly seven decades meant the most to Peggy. She never remarried and never moved on from what happened.

True Love Conquers All

As for Peggy, she makes sure to visit her husband’s grave every single day. “When people speak of closure, they are people who have never experienced anything like this,” explained Peggy in one of the interviews she gave. This tale of undying devotion and love that knows no boundaries is an inspiration to all. Peggy did not stop loving Billie, not for a split second. Eventually, it was her incessant drive to uncover what happened to him that finally unveiled the truth.
