Set in a galaxy far far away, this intergalactic space opera has more than one iconic film duo. Luke and Leia made the list for their awkward romantic/sibling relationship. The two Skywalkers split at birth are central to the Star Wars saga and both sensitive to the force. Actress Carrie Fisher recently passed away after reprising her role as Leia in the latest instalment of the Star Wars Saga, The Force Awakens. Mark Hamil is a prolific voice actor who has voiced countless characters in film, television, and video games since the 1970’s.
Batman and Robin – Batman
Starring Adam West as Batman and Burt Ward as Robin, the dynamic duo hit the big screen just two months after the TV series wrapped. The caped crusaders never shied away from a task and always get the girl and the bad guy. Burt Ward hasn’t done too much except promote his past work with the Batman Franchise in recent years. West is often found spoofing his own persona and provides voices on animated series’s as himself.
Charlie and Maverick – Top Gun
Top Gun was released in May 1986 to mixed reviews but the one thing most people agree on is that the duo of Maverick and Charlie is one for the books! The young Maverick is played by action star Tom Cruise who pursues Top Gun instructor Charlie Blackwood, played by Kelly McGillis. Cruise never seems to take a break and is constantly working on one action film or another. McGillis currently teaches acting at The New York Studio for Stage and Screen.
Bonnie and Clyde – Bonnie and Clyde
Based on the real life story of crime couple Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow, the 1967 film starred Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway. The film was considered a cinematic masterpiece in it’s time and broke several taboos. This past year the duo was reunited at the Academy Awards Ceremony where they were responsible for announcing the Best Picture Award. A major faux pas occurred when Beatty accidentally announced the wrong film as the winner and then tried to explain what happened on live television.
Vivian and Edward – Pretty Woman
Richard Gere plays the controlling and slightly egotistical character of Edward Lewis, a corporate lawyer who hires an escort to play his girlfriend for a week. Julia Roberts plays tough talking Vivian Ward that eventually steals his heart. Both of these actors have gone on to do amazing work in Hollywood. In recent years, Gere has slowed down his acting career in favor of political endorsements and action. Roberts never seems to quit and recently starred in the movie Money Monster.
Harry and Sally – When Harry Met Sally
This film follows the pair from the time they meet on a cross country road trip over the course of twelve years. The film’s pivotal question, “Can men and women ever just be friends?” is still relevant today. Ryan has starred in plenty of films and made her directorial debut recently with the film Ithica. Crystal lent his voice to the animated feature Monsters, Inc. and has hosted the Academy Awards several time, most recently in 2012.
Westley and Princess Buttercup – The Princess Bride
In The Princess Bride, bossy Princess Buttercup orders around her loyal farm hand Westley, who’s devotion eventually wins her over. Westley and Buttercup have a complicated courtship involving pirates and dastardly scallions but eventually find solace in each others arms. Robin Wright has come a long way from her princess days and is the star of the political drama House of Cards. Cary Elwes currently stars in the series The Art of More and regularly works in theater.
John and Jane – Mr. and Mrs. Smith
In this 2005 movie, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie starred as Mr. and Mrs. Smith, a middle class couple who are both secretly trained assassins hired to kill one another. The film was a box office hit and fodder for countless tabloids. Brad and Angie have since parted ways but both are dedicated to their craft. Brad has several films in the works right now and Jolie is focusing on her humanitarian work and raising social awareness globally.
Tyler and Nora – Step Up
Another movie couple that transitioned their love from the small screen to real life and honestly, we couldn’t be happier about this! Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan Tatum starred in the 2006 dance film Step Up, and it’s true what they say that opposites attract. Disadvantaged street dancer Tyler played by Channing Tatum, finds himself forced to perform in a dance showcase with the privileged Nora, as played by Jenna. The pair married in 2009 and are the proud parents to a beautiful baby girl.
Lloyd and Harry – Dumb and Dumber
Released in 1994 this Farrelly Brothers film instantly became a cult classic. The movie tells the story of Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunne, two dimwitted but lovable buddies pursued by criminals on a cross country goose chase. Carrey played Christmas and reprised his role in the 2014 sequel, Dumb and Dumber To. Jeff Daniels changed it up to play a more serious role in HBO series, The Newsroom, and even won an Emmy for his work.
Andie and Ben – How To Lose A Guy in 10 Days
Kate Hudson plays Andie Anderson, a magazine writer and Matthew McConaughey plays advertising executive Benjamin Barry in this beloved romantic comedy film. Anderson makes a bet with a co-worker that should could make a guy fall in and out in love with her in ten days. McConaughey won an Oscar award in 2013 for his gripping performance in The Dallas Buyers Club. Hudson most recently lent her voice to the animated feature Kung Fu Panda 3.
Riggs and Murtaugh – Lethal Weapon
Lethal Weapon starred Mel Gibson and Danny Glover as two LAPD detectives who against all odds become good friends and great partners. Gibson plays Riggs in a role that helped cement his place in the buddy cop genre. Gibson’s career has taken a bit of a beating in recent years following some unsavory behavior on the actors part. Glover has appeared in numerous films and television shows. He spends his energy these days supporting various humanitarian and political causes.
Nina and George – The Object of My Affection
This film was adapted from a novel of the same name and stars Jennifer Aniston as Nina and Paul Rudd as George. Aniston is the pregnant New York social worker who ends up falling for her gay best friend when the pair decide to raise the child together. Rudd has been in several successful comedies in recent years including I Love You Man and This is 40. Aniston has appeared in film such as Horrible Bosses and We’re the Millers.
Bella and Edward – Twilight
A true teen fantasy romance if I ever did see one! Bella Swan, played by deadpan Kristen Stewart, falls in love with Robert Pattinson as Edward Cullen in a sleepy Oregon town. The movie grossed over $393 million worldwide and spawned an enormous amount of retail profits as well. Stewart is the face of Chanel and Balenciaga and Pattinson is a big player on the humanitarian aid circuit.
Sue and Crocodile Dundee – Crocodile Dundee
Set in the Australian outback, the film follows the exploits of Mick Dundee and Newsday reporter Sue Charlton as played by Linda Kozlowski. Mick and Sue fall in love on screen and in real life too! Actor Paul Hogan and his co-star were married until 2014 but parted ways due to irreconcilable differences. Hogan is a stand up performer in Australia and tours regularly. Linda gave up on acting in favor of raising her son, Chance, and focusing on personal projects.
Rose and Jack- Titanic
This 1997 historical epic presented a fictionalized and doomed love story between Jack and Rose, two passengers on the ocean liner. The film was the highest grossing film of all time until Avatar in 2009. Kate and Leo are still close friends following their time together on Titanic and also starred in the film Revolutionary Road together. Leo is very much involved in raising awareness to climate change and the dangers of oil drilling in addition to his busy film schedule.
Latika and Jamal – Slumdog Millionnaire
Dev Patel stars as Jamal Malik who just wants to make it out of Juhu Slum. He has an intense love affair with Latika, a girl from the slum. The movie garnered critical acclaim when it was released and is still popular today. Dev Patel was nominated for an academy award for his role in he drama Lion in 2016. Freida Pinto has appeared in several American and British productions and is credited for breaking the stereotype of an Indian woman in foreign films.
Paula and Zack – An Officer and a Gentleman
Yes, another romantic comedy starring Richard Gere! He plays Zack, a U.S. Navy Aviation Officer who falls in love with a woman named Paula, played by Debra Winger. After proclaiming his love for Paula, Zack carries her out of the factory where she works amidst hoots and hollers from her co-workers. Winger is more likely to be found behind a camera as opposed to in front of one these days and her personal humanitarian projects.
Viola and William – Shakespeare In Love
This fantastic film depicts a love affair between the young William Shakespeare, played by Joseph Fiennes and a young socialite. Viola de Lesseps, Gwyneth Paltrow, disguises herself as a boy in order to act in one of Shakespeare’s productions but when he finds out her true identity can’t help but fall in love. Paltrow has been the face of Estee Lauder perfume since 2005 and Fiennes was most recently seen in the second season of American Horror Story.
Jesse and Celine – Before Midnight
We’ve met Jesse and Celine before in the movie Before Sunset which launched their love affair. Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy manage to portray an imperfect marriage perfectly and never cease to entrance us. Hawke’s career has slowed down considerably since the 90’s and his personal life took more media coverage in recent years. The adorable Delpy has continued to write and produce films in both English and French and became an American citizen in 2001.
Tiffany and Pat – Silver Linings Playbook
Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence stole our hearts in their roles in Silver Linings Playbook. Lawrence even walked away with an Oscar following her portrayal of the young widow Tiffany. Tiffany and Pats’s unconventional relationship ends up helping them both move past their grief and see the “silver lining” in every event. Cooper was nominated for an Academy Award in 2015 for his role in American Sniper. Jennifer Lawrence has been ranked the highest paid actress in the world since 2015.
Jack and Annie – Speed
In 1994 the movie Speed thrilled audiences with its death defying action sequences orchestrated by a young Keanu Reeves. Annie, played by Sandra Bullock inadvertently becomes a hero and at the end of the movie Annie and Jack, played by Reeves, share a passionate kiss in front of a crowd of cheering onlookers. Reeves has done countless action movies and most recently released John Wick II. Bullock heads her own production company and is a dedicated mom to her two children.
Chewbacca and Han Solo – Star Wars
The legendary Wookie is the loyal co-pilot of the Millennium Falcon with smuggler Han Solo. Chewie and Han fight for the resistance in the Clone Wars and always seem to narrowly escape sure fire capture and punishment. Chewbacca was played by the English/ American actor Peter Mayhew, who suffers from Marfan Syndrome which lead to his colossal height of 7 feet 3 inches. Harrison Ford’s career has spanned six decades and a host of Hollywood blockbusters. He is married to fellow actor Calista Flockhart.
Jay and Silent Bob – Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back
The fictional duo of Jay and Silent Bob are played by real life buddies Jason Mewes and Kevin Smith. The duo have appeared in most of Smith’s films. Mewes has worked as a producer for several projects and co-hosts a weekly podcast with Smith called Jay and Silent Bob Get Old. Kevin Smith has had a noteworthy physical transformation and is well known for his humors and long Q&A sessions that appear on DVD releases of his films.
Carrie and Big – Sex and the City
New York City relationship columnist Carrie Bradshaw has numerous love interests, but the one who occupies most of her time is of course Mr. Big, played by Chris Noth. Sarah Jessica Parker is now starring in the HBO series Divorce but is still largely known for her portrayal of Carrie. Noth was nominated for a Golden Globe for his time on Sex and The City and for his role in The Good Wife in 2010.
Bridget and Mark – Bridget Jones’s Diary
Bridget Jones was expertly acted by Renee Zellwegger who brought just the right amount of humor to every sad situation Bridget faced. Mark Darcy, the slightly grumpy lawyer that ends up falling for Ms. Jones was none other than the fantastic Colin Firth. The pair was so successful they returned for two sequels together. Zellwegger is fresh off of a six year hiatus from acting and Firth recently received his star on the Hollywood walk of fame.
Troy and Gabriella – High School Musical
Troy Bolton, the star basketball player at his small town high school falls for Gabriella during summer vacation and is surprised to see her at his high school in the fall. The two sing their praises for each other throughout the whole movie and had us dancing right along with them. Zac Efron launched his career thanks to High School Musical and secured his status as a Hollywood hunk. Vanessa Hudgens recently took part in the live action interpretation of Grease in 2016.
Anna and Will – Notting Hill
It appears any movie duo that is half Julia Roberts is worthy of noticing. Roberts and Hugh Grant starred in this romantic comedy in 1999 set in the neighborhood of Notting Hill, London. The film was well received by critics and the highest grossing British film released that year. Despite having a successful acting career spanning over 30 years, Grant is an “anti-actor”. He has apparently claimed that acting is not his true calling but rather something he just kind of fell into.
Molly and Sam – Ghost
Starring Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore as Molly and Sam, Ghost is one of the quintessential movies of the 90’s. The infamous pottery scene is a definite classic one. Sadly, Patrick Swayze passed away after a battle with pancreatic cancer in 2009. During his career he was nominated three times for Golden Globe Awards. Following her 1997 role in the film G.I. Jane, Demi Moore’s career took a significant down turn but she has stayed popular with the media.
Elizabeth and Will – Pirates of the Caribbean
This film by Jerry Bruckheimer is based on a theme park ride by the same name. Will Turner must work to prove his love to Elizabeth Swan, who is the prim girl turned daredevil who eventually weds Turner. Bloom gained a lot of recognition for his role in Pirates and established himself as leading man in Hollywood. Knightly has become famous for starring in period dramas and is apparently the second highest paid actress in Hollywood.
Cheech and Chong – Up In Smoke
Cheech and Chong are a Grammy winning comedic duo consisting of Richard “Cheech” Marin and Tommy Chong. The pair became famous in the 1970’s and 1980’s. Up In Smoke was the pair’s first feature length film and is still lauded by fans as establishing the stoner comedy genre. Tommy Chong guest starred on That 70’s Show as a character very similar to the one he made famous decades before. Cheech Marin appeared in the series Nash Bridges until it’s cancellation in 2001.
Harry and Marv – Home Alone
The no-good bad guys Harry and Marv are kind of the guys you love to hate. Their battle against the young Kevin McCallister are amusing and legendary! Joe Pesci plays Harry, the slightly smarter criminal of the pair and Daniel Stern is cast perfectly as Marv. Pesci retired from acting in 1999 and has only appeared sporadically in film and television since. Daniel Stern has worked as voice over actor for the modern television series interpretation of The Wonder Years.
Wayne and Garth – Wayne’s World
Party On Garth! Party On Wayne! Who could ever forget these two and their crazy hair, fantastical day dreams, and tubular hand written songs? Dana Carvey played Garth Algar and is well known for his amazing versatility as an actor. Carvey is best known for his impersonation of former president George H.W. Bush on SNL. Canadian actor Mike Myers supplied the voice of Shrek in the animated series and recently was honored by the Canadian government with a postal stamp with his likeness.
Harold and Kumar – Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle
Harold and Kumar are just two guys on the hunt for a good burger. John Cho, who played Harold, was recently cast in the horror drama series Sleepy Hollow. Kal Penn stars in the role of Seth Wright on the series Designated Survivor on ABC. Penn once worked for the Obama administration as the Associate Director in the Office of Public Engagement but left when he was offered a regular role on How I Met Your Mother.
Marty and Doc – Back To The Future
The 1985 science fiction adventure comedy grossed over $381 million worldwide and became an instant cult classic. Doc Walker and his hair brained ideas and eccentric personality play perfectly with young Marty McFly’s adventurous spirit. Michael J. Fox retired from acting due to his diagnosis with Parkinson’s disease at only 29 years old. Christopher Lloyd has done a ton of voice over acting work, and earned two Daytime Emmy Award Nominations for voicing The Hacker on the PBS series Cyberchase.
Thelma and Louise – Thelma and Louise
This movie casts Geena Davis as Thelma Dickenson and Susan Sarandon as her loyal friend Louise Sawyer. Thelma and Louise are on the run from the law and abusive relationships and take their own lives by driving off the side of the Grand Canyon at full speed. Davis is currently starring in the horror TV series The Exorcist on Fox. Sarandon has also continued acting in film and television and portrayed Bette Davis in the FX series Feud.
Kim and Edward- Edward Scissorhands
The dark romantic fantasy by the king of quirky, Tim Burton, starred Johnny Depp as Edward and Winona Ryder as his love interest Kim. The innocence of their love is marred by jealously, and the two lovers are torn apart by the films end. Winona had a period of her career where she was unemployable due to personal issues but made a comeback. Her role on the Netflix original series Stranger Things drew praise from critics and fans.
Shirley and Costas – Shirley Valentine
Shirley Valentine is an award winning romantic comedy that follows middle aged housewife Shirley’s vacation romance. Tom Conti plays Costas Dimitriades, the charming owner of a Greek Tavern who bolsters Shirley’s waning self esteem. Conti has been a long standing feature of the British theater scene and recently published a novel, The Doctor, in 2004. Pauline Collins won several awards for her role in Shirley Valentine and was even voted sexiest woman in Britain in 1990. She is still a feature on British television programming today.
Charlie and Joanne – Charlie Wilson’s War
This movie is based on the story of U.S. Congressman Charlie Wilson and his involvement in the Soviet-Afghan War. Julia Roberts plays Charlie’s friend and romantic interest Joanne Herring who tries to convince Wilson to take more interest in the people of Afghanistan. Hanks and Roberts worked together again following Charlie Wilson’s War and starred in the film Larry Crowne together. Hanks recently starred in Sully in 2016 and Roberts in the comedy Mother’s Day with Jennifer Aniston.
John and Elizabeth – 9 1/2 Weeks
Remember this duo from the 1986 drama 9 1/2 Weeks? Kim Bassinger stars as Elizabeth McGraw, an art gallery maven who launches into an affair with a mysterious wall-street executive. Mickey Rourke plays John Gray, an interesting role for the retired boxer.
Danny and Sandy – Grease
The bad boy and the good girl trope never gets old. Grease was a massive success and is still regarded as the most successful movie musical of all time. John Travolta has gone on to star in countless big budget films and is known for his philanthropy as well as acting chops. Olivia Newton John followed up her success in Grease with four Grammy awards and ten Top Ten Billboard Hot 100 singles. Olivia Newton-John is a long time activist for animal rights and the environment and regularly advocates for increased health awareness.
Captain Kirk and Spock – Star Trek
Captain James T. Kirk is in charge of the star ship USS Enterprise and its trusty crew. Kirk and the half Vulcan, Mr. Spock have a strong bond despite Spock’s stoic outlook. Friends in real life, William Shatner who defined the character of Captain Kirk and Leonard Nimoy had a close relationship.
